HOT TIP | BUY IN BULK TO SAVE $$

Flour can be overwhelming and pricy if you like to try different recipes that call for rice, almond, oat, gluten-free, all purpose just to name a few. I highly recommend heading to a refill store, whether it's Bulk Barn or your local re-fillery to purchase smaller amounts. They're also great for other items like spices, salt, nuts and more. Saves you money and less potential for waste.

INGREDIENTS

FILLING

4 cups sliced apples, skin removed - we recommend honey crisp or cortland apples for baking
¼ cup maple syrup - try this Traditional Indigenous Maple Syrup!
1 tsp real vanilla extract - Madagascar Vanilla is perfection!
1 tsp cinnamon
Pinch of nutmeg
1 tbsp cornstarch (non-GMO) or arrowroot starch

CRISP

1 cup all purpose gluten-free flour (or regular, unbleached flour)
1 cup gluten-free rolled oats
¼ cup maple syrup
½ cup coconut oil or grass-fed butter, melted
1/2 tsp cinnamon
1/4 tsp salt

METHOD

  1. Preheat oven to 350F and grease a baking dish with a little extra coconut oil, we used a 9" baking dish.
  2. Combine apple, maple syrup, vanilla, cinnamon, nutmeg & starch, pour into baking dish. Let sit for 5 minutes.
  3. Combine topping ingredients; flour, oats, maple syrup, coconut oil, cinnamon and salt. Combine until fully mixed and has a crumbly texture. Let sit in the fridge for 5 minutes, so the oil/ fat hardens a bit.
  4. Mix about 1/4 cup of the oat crumbles into the apple mix. Add to the baking dish and evenly cover with the rest of the topping.
  5. Bake for 45-55 minutes - until the topping is crisp and lightly browned, the you'll be able to hear the fruit bubbling. Let sit for about 10 minutes before serving with your fave vanilla ice cream.
